0. Bathyscaphes

I always wanted to have a place where I could just put my various thoughts. I was thinking about simply starting a handwritten journal, but this way, with an open blog, I believe it can be much more worthwhile...

I named this blog after the invention of Auguste Piccard, the bathyscaphe.  The word was coined by the inventor, putting together the Greek roots bathus, meaning 'deep,' and skaphos, meaning 'vessel' or 'ship'. I chose it for two reasons. First, this is meant to become a journal for some deeper, more exploratory, and perhaps more meandering thoughts; so the submersible vessel that is the bathyscaphe fits very well. Second, I just like the way it sounds. Perhaps the way I hear 'escapes' when I say it.

I put up a quotation from Piccard above, I think it embodies my goal pretty well, and makes me like the name of the blog even more. Hmm...I suppose this makes more than two reasons now...

I have no real intention of this becoming a big thing. The only reason I'm using Blogger and not a pencil and paper is because I feel more like I'm talking to someone else rather than myself. And I kind of like that. Does that make me more or less crazy? I'm not sure.

That said, if anyone ever wanted to post a comment, I would like that a lot and would think you are a really awesome person.

I have no idea where this will take me. I have no idea if any of the thoughts I put down here, any of the areas I explore, will amount to anything. I guess that's why they're bathyscaphes, though.
